Museum of Contemporary Art*

Los Angeles, California

Gruen Associates was the Executive Architect for the Arata Isozaki & Associates-designed museum. The 98,000 SF of interior space includes over 50,000 SF of galleries and public areas, a 240-seat auditorium (with custom perforated stainless-steel acoustic panels used for performance art, lectures and special art projects), as well as a museum bookstore, library and office space. Galleries vary in size from less than 2,000 SF to over 7,000 SF with ceilings ranging from 10-FT to nearly 25-FT heights. One pyramidal skylight reaches to over 50 FT at its apex. All gallery spaces are located on one floor, further enhancing the building’s efficient circulation flow. This project received the 2001 Landmark Award from the Los Angeles Business Council and was named by the AIA as one of the “10 Best Works of American Architecture” completed since 1980.
